Members of ANAK Publishing Worker Co-op (a subsidiary of ANAK Inc.) were at the Manitoba Legislative Building today to help launch the United Nations International Year of Cooperatives.

Minister responsible for co-operative development, and Family Services and Consumer Affairs, Gord Mackintosh celebrated the importance of more than 400 co-operatives to the province’s economy. “Co-operatives help build communities by creating jobs and keep wealth in the community by returning dividends to members,” Mackintosh said. “They are especially important in rural and remote communities where they are often the only providers of key services.”

The ANAK In-School Kapatid Mentorship Program launched their sixth year at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute on November 9. About 50 students and some parents attended the launch. The ANAK In-School Kapatid Mentorship Program was established in 2006 at DMCI High School. The following year, the program expanded to include the Bahay Kubo Initiative at Wellington School. The program aims to facilitate reciprocal learning through the cultural integration of newcomer youth to Winnipeg and the exploration of Filipino heritage by our 1.5 and second generation mentors. This learning takes place via mentorship, partnership, literacy/academic projects and activities. Mentors must complete a requisite orientation and have completed high school to volunteer as a mentor.

Were you one of those kids in school wondering where the Filipinos and Filipino-Canadians were in your Canadian textbooks? Did you continue to wonder the same thing when you grew into an adult?

The reality is is that across Canada, Filipino-Canadians have not gained the same attention as other immigrant groups. Now, a team of community partners and researchers wants to understand how we're doing because national statistics say we're not doing so well.

Filipino-Canadian youth struggle to finish high school and university. We also appear to struggle with underemployment as we enter the workforce. Do you agree? You now FINALLY have a say.

ANAK is urging Winnipeggers to spread the word about the Filipino Youth Transitions in Canada survey at http://fytic.edudata.ca/ . It is important that Winnipeg is represented in this first-ever national study on Filipino-Canadian youth.

FYTiC was developed in Toronto by York University professor, Dr. Philip Kelly, and the Community Alliance for Social Justice. It is ta...king place in 4 cities across Canada (Winnipeg, Toronto, Hamilton and Vancouver). In Winnipeg, ANAK is partnering as research collaborator.

We want to find out:

- if our Filipino-Canadian identity has any impact on our economic opportunities;
- if our parents`employment success shapes our own opportunities in the future; and
- if being a `successful`Filipino-Canadian is a matter of where you live in Canada.

Each city represents its own unique Filipino-Canadian story. So, we need you to tell us about you (and all your barkada).

Participate in the FYTiC survey at http://www.fytic.edudata.ca/ , if you are:

- Filipino-Canadian (with one or both parents of Filipino heritage)
- over 18 years of age (there is no maximum age)
- born in Canada or immigrated before the age of 13

ANAK is pleased to work with Dr. Phillip Kelly (York University) on the Filipino Youth Transitions in Canada Project. Congratulations to Darlyne Bautista and Kezia Malabanan in joining the national research team. Case studies will take place in Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg and Hamilton.

Filipino immigrants arrive in Canada with one of the highest percentages of university-level education among all recent immigrant groups, and yet the children of Filipino immigrants have one of the lowest rates of university graduation. It would seem that a pattern is emerging of Filipino-Canadian youth reproducing the subordinate labour market positions into which their parents were incorporated upon arrival. The objective of this project is to examine the roots of these inter-generational outcomes.

This research should help us understand how ethnic identity is implicated in economic opportunities, how parental employment is reproduced in the life chances of their children, and how different immigrant settlement sites shape the next generation in important ways.

ANAK Short Film Project by Leron Leron Sinta Group

ANAK mentors, volunteers and kapatid (mentees) capped another fun-filled year as part of the Kapatid In-School mentorship program at DMCI. Festivities were held today at DMCI complete with dinner, games, and special awards. The program proved to raise the esteem, confidence and leadership of newcomer mentees through culturally relevant activities including film, volunteerism, and academics.

'12' explores the diverse experiences of migrants past and present who arrived in Canada at the tender age of 12. Winner of the 2008 Reel Diversity Film Competition for emerging filmmakers of colour, this film shares an important message for all Canadians.

ANAK panelists (Daisydee Bautista, Andrew Aviso, Rocky Alfonso, Julian Eiril Arcega, Neneth Banas, Kezia Malabanan and WSD Liason Officer, Perla Javate) were featured as part of the University of Winnipeg Education in Diversity Conference. The presentation on the ANAK Kapatid In-School Mentorship program introduced the ANAK model in ethno-cultural based programming led by Filipino-Canadian post secondary students and young professionals in collaboration with Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute staff.

The program offers academic and social supports to newcomers as an after school program. It promotes the successful integration of newcomers in Canadian society. This panel presentation reflects the evolution of the program and key learning experiences from the perspective of ANAK members, volunteers and collaborative partners in an ethno-cultural community. The information shared in this presentation is pertinent to community development practices as well as building capacity in an organization.

This year's theme Sino Ka?: Our Filipino Canadian Identity through the Arts came to life with special guests from Toronto's Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts & Culture. The day included an inspirational speech from keynote speaker Jodinand Aguillon as well as workshops in Theatre (Facilitator Darrell Gamotin), Visual Arts (Kristina Guison) and Poetry as a Second Language (Christine Balmes) at the University of Manitoba. Following, over 100 guests enjoyed a gala evening of performances from the day's budding new artists.

Popular mentorship program needs support

Daphne Jalique says a Filipino youth mentorship program in desperate need of more mentors provided her with the guidance and support she needed to navigate high school life.

"Without the ANAK Kapatid program, I certainly wouldn’t have had as clear a path through high school," Jalique said.

For this 22-year-old, the path has led to the University of Manitoba, where she is in her fourth year of a biochemistry degree with an eye on graduate work. The downtown resident is also a mentor with ANAK.

The program is designed for Filipino youth who are newcomers to Winnipeg school systems. It runs each Wednesday evening at Daniel McIntyre School in the West End and cannot take on any more students.

Executive director Daisydee Bautista says while it is common for former students to return to the fold as mentors, the program is in constant need of more.

"We are always in need. We are at capacity here," she said.

While the program is based on one-to-one support with a mentor and student, this year marked a change for the program.

"We’re providing more life-skills development to students such as leadership and relationship advice," said Bautista.

Andrew Aviso, a West End resident who was one of the program’s original mentors when it launched in 2006, said he was glad to see the popularity of the program rise.

"Word of it gets out to the student population much more than it did five years ago," he said.

For another current mentor and former student, North End resident Ricardo Reyes, the program was key in helping with his schooling.

"When I first arrived in Winnipeg, learning was a different situation because I was in a new learning environment," he said.

"Many students find their first year of classes in a new country extra tough," he said.

Since 2006, the mentorship program has expanded from Daniel McIntyre and Wellington Elementary School to include students from schools such as Sisler High School.

However Bautista said that without further support both from schools and community volunteers, the program couldn’t grow beyond the approximately 50 students currently being mentored.

"The demand is so great," she said.

ANAK is proud to take part in the National Metropolis Conference 2011 in Vancouver, British Columbia from March 24 to 26, 2011. The conference entitled, 'Immigration: Bringing the World to Canada' will focus on the role of immigration in connecting Canada with the rest of the world.

The conference will include six plenary panels with distinguished speakers and over one hundred workshop and roundtable sessions on a wide variety of topics related to immigration and cultural diversity. We anticipate that approximately one thousand participants, drawn mainly from Canada but a significant number of international participants is also expected. Panelists Daisydee Bautista and Neneth Banas will present on ANAK's programs and initiatives.

Bahay Kubo Intiative 2011 Launch

The program is coordinated fully by ANAK Kapatid program participants in an effort to build greater capacity and esteem among Filipino-Canadian youth.

ANAK is pleased to announce that its affiliate, ANAK Publishing Worker Cooperative Ltd., will be launching 2 books in December 2011. Both works are based on oral history interviews collected from the Filipino-Canadian community in Winnipeg. The first book From Manila to Manitoba: Celebrating 50 Years with the Filipino-Canadian Community in Winnipeg, 1959-2009 will elaborate on information, research, and artefacts collected for the popular museum exhibit held last summer 2010. The second book, Sandok, a cookbook containing regional Filipino recipes, ethnographies, and personal narratives of the community's flourishing restaurant and bakery industry will also be featured.

"ANAK Publishing aims to fill the gap that exists for Filipino-Canadian works in Canada. In doing so, we hope to provide a local voice, local jobs and support for local scholars, writers and artists. We believe in providing quality works and are honoured to work with such a strong network of academics. These works are the first of many to come!," says ANAK Publishing.

After its 3-month run at the Manitoba Museum from June 18 to Septembre 26, this first-ever Filipino-Canadian historical exhibit in Manitoba will now begin touring both Manitoba and Canada. This tour will also feature never before seen works by local artist, Chris Macalino.

Official opening of Manila to Manitoba Exhibit

ANAK officially opened the From Manila to Manitoba Filipino-Canadian Oral History exhibit at the Manitoba Museum on June 18, 2010. The exhibit is the first to honour the history of the Filipino-Canadian community in Winnipeg. (See video from Tracy Koga's Backstage on Shaw TV Winnipeg)

Special guests, long-time supporters, well wishers and various media witnessed the momentous occasion. "When you take a look around this exhibit, I want you to keep in mind the things you cannot readily see. This exhibit was created by the youth of our community, your ANAK - your children, with the hope of creating a lasting understanding of who we are as Filipino Canadians. So, we can carry this message forward with a sense of pride, unity and hope that one can only gain from listening and learning from each other," said curator, Darlyne Bautista, before joining the research team for the ribbon cutting ceremony with Manitoba Museum Executive Director, Claudette LeClerc, and Minister of Heritage, Flor Marcelino.

The exhibit took over 2 years to develop, research and design with the support of designer Symmone Ochoa, Manitoba Heritage Grants Program, Canadian Oral History Centre at the University of Winnipeg, the Manitoba Museum. We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone for helping us realize this dream of hope and unity in the community. ANAK intends to continue its oral history research. ANAK volunteers, DMCI mentors, and Wellington students (Grades K-6) came together in May/June for a 6 week workshop on Tagalog/English reading and creative writing. Children authored their very own legends and stories! Whatwould you do if you found a magic coin? How did the cat get its meow or the mermaid its' tail? The possibilities are endless as participants were eager to let us know. Participants and teachers will receive an anthology of their works.

A very special thank you to Ms. Amy Lingat, parents, program leaders (Anthony Ngayan and Andrew Aviso), and volunteers. Your dedication continues to make this program possible.

Liwayway Scholarship competition extended for University Students

Students at the University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba who have registered to attend the Migration and Development in the Philippines, 1960-2010 (Mult-1100 & Mult-2100)course at the University of Winnipeg are eligible to receive full-paid tuition under the ANAK Liwayway Scholarship. The deadline has been extended to June 30, 2010.

"We want to make sure all students have the opportunity to take part in this very important discussion. Canadians take for granted that there are so many Filipinos arriving as immigrants to the country. We forget to really ask 'why?' 'What's really going on (in the Philippines) to push millions of Filipinos to all corners of the world? It is so rare that a world reknowned scholar, like Antonio Tujan, can offer some real insight on the topic. We want to help all interested students take part and we know finances can pose a real challenge to this. Extending the scholarship is one way we can help," says ANAK.

The connection we carry forward as both Filipinos and Canadians must be nurtured with consistent dialog and discussion. The issues that touch us both at home in Canada and in the Philippines belong in the forefront of our learning and development. WINNIPEG, MB - The University of Winnipeg Global College and the Filipino-Canadian community organization, Aksyon Ng Ating Kabataan Inc. (ANAK) signed an agreement today creating a partnership offering a Philippine Studies Summer Institute at the University of Winnipeg this August. This timely agreement marks 50 years of Filipino achievements in Manitoba by tracing Filipino history in Manitoba and The Philippines taught by guest instructor Antonio Tujan Junior, from the Institute for Political Economy in the Philippines and Director, IBON Research Foundation.

Examine Migration & DevelopmentThis university three-credit course will examine migration and development in the Philippines and it will explore the political, economic, and social impact of labour migration in the Philippines especially in terms of its challenges to human rights and development in the past fifty years.

“Global College has the mandate to build a global learning commons at University of Winnipeg,” said Marilou McPhedran, Principal of Global College. “Working with passionate youth leaders at ANAK who want to increase access to Philippine Studies through this Global College Summer Institute is a good partnership in community learning. This institute harnesses technology to offer a unique opportunity for a wide range of students, including Filipino-Canadians in Winnipeg and other places, international students in other countries and UWinnipeg students to learn in-person or on-line from a leading Filipino visiting scholar.”

Primary Source of Economic Development"ANAK has worked with the Global College at the University of Winnipeg since 2007,” said Daisydee Bautista, ANAK Director. “We are pleased to shed light on the less known plight of Filipino migrants and their human rights. These migrants are the Philippines' primary source of economic development. It is our hope that we can build a greater dialogue and understanding on all the important issues of migrant labour."

As Filipino-Canadians, we each have a story. Today we celebrate, as a community, the many memories that connect us to our heritage. Although we have arrived in Winnipeg at different times and through different generations, each of our connections to the Philippines often began with one person.

For me, my mother is the reason I am here. She was the first to immigrate to Winnipeg, and then my father followed soon after. They started a family and so now here is where I call home and why my roots are in the Philippines. For my mother the story might be different. She may have pioneered the start of our lives as Filipino-Canadians, but who motivated her to leave the Philippines? Was it for the future of her children? Or was it for the family she left behind? Or both?

ANAK invites you to honour and remember the person (or people) who inspired your story. Create a lasting memory by featuring their name at the Manila to Manitoba Exhibit at The Manitoba Museum from June to September 2010. We hope for the exhibit to travel through parts of Canada. This is Winnipeg’s first Filipino-Canadian oral history exhibit. Name places cost $20 each. All proceeds will go towards the construction of the exhibit and hosting of the Philippine Studies Summer Institute in August 2010.

It’s been said, “Pictures are worth a thousand words”. Pictures capture a moment, person or an event in time. On September 28, 2009 Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) struck the Philippines, hitting the country with a month’s worth of rain in less than 12 hours. In less than 24 hours, pictures were up displaying Ondoy’s wrath. It was these pictures that struck a nerve within me, a feeling of obligation to help the country I bear my roots from. There were other fundraising efforts throughout the city in which I could have contributed my time and effort, but I felt that the youth and generation I know, should be able to help out in our own way.

People said, “Well, --it happens everyday and there’s nothing we can do about it.” However, within just a few days and some e-mails, between my fellow ANAK members and I, we came up with “After the Rain: A Benefit Concert for the Victims of Typhoon Ondoy”, which was organized at the University of Winnipeg Bulman Student Centre on October 23, 2009 at 7pm. This is my thank you to those who made the night successful: those who bought tickets, donated door prizes and attended; the volunteers: ANAK Inc. members & UWFSA members; Kuya Art, our DJ for the night; UWSA (University of Winnipeg Students’ Association) for letting us use their space and equipment and finally, the performers: Melanie C. Sayarot, Mimoza Duot, Sherrie Ancheta, Matthew Arbillo, SoulDefy, Brakada, Sik Intentions, Amanda Joy Ruiz, Celeste Alcantara & SWIGFU, you are all so very talented and I am personally so grateful for your willingness to perform in less than three weeks. After ticket sales, raffles, food and drink sales, “After the Rain” raised over a thousand dollars, all of which will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross Disaster Relief in Asia. Stuff happens, and there IS something we did about it. Let’s all try to do more.

Please join us.

"For many of us with family still in the Philippines, the worry is overwhelming. We feel helpless that we cannot be there with them to comfort them during this crisis. The Dream for Philippine Studies: ANAK's Response to Mr. Lamoureux

In the last publication of Pilipino Express, Kevin Lamoureux’s article U of W Seeks closer ties with Philippines welcomed feedback regarding Philippine studies. Mr. Lamoureux was kind enough to mention “the ANAK group” in his thought piece. However, despite this small mention, we feel it is only fitting that we at ANAK share in this discussion. As Filipino-Canadian students, youth, and members of the community, we wish to underline that Philippine studies has been the thrust of our mandate since 2006. It is through our young lifetime as being “othered” in academia through a history that does not recognize our history; and of living in a society that knows us more through labels and stereotypes that we must respond. The development of Philippine Studies in Winnipeg will be the culmination of our identity, as we need to conceptualize it. It is not something that we feel should be simplified as an “academic option” or an “immigration stream” as Mr. Lamoureux so gently tries to sell it as. It really is something that should come with the voice of the community truly in mind. The formation of Philippine Studies in Winnipeg is the reality of how future generations of Filipino-Canadians will come to understand who they are.

ANAK hosted its 3rd annual Philippine Heritage Liwayway Conference to 60 registered high school students at the University of Winnipeg. Under the theme "Pamunuan" (Leadership), Filipino-Canadian young professionals shared the relevance of their identity and heritage in their chosen career paths.

"Do it because you want to not because you have to," advised keynote speaker and TecVoc teacher, Emil Contreras who underlined the importance of everyday goals. Students were divided into workshops with SWIGFU, Ivy Lopez-Sarmiento, Dr. Gilbert Miranda, and Dr. Raphael Nepomuceno. Following, a gala celebration capped off the annual event.

In an effort to pursue greater studies and research on Philippine issues, ANAK members Darlyne Bautista and Maureen Justiniano have begun their graduate studies at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Attracting scholars and guests from throughout the world, the center gave them an opportunity to brainstorm with Chito Gascon, Executive Director of Libertas in Quezon City. Gascon is acclaimed for his role as student body president at the University of the Philippines during the fall of the Marcos administration. Gascon became the youngest appointed member of the commission to write the Philippine Constitution under the Aquino Administration.

*To ensure the quality of ANAK programming and services, ANAK membership is awarded to those who have completed an ANAK orientation and expressed a commitment to ANAK's mandate as a volunteer or kapatid. Volunteers and participants are always welcome.

ANAK Mentorship Program

The ANAK In-School Kapatid Mentorship Program was established in 2006 at DMCI High School. The following year, the program expanded to include the Bahay Kubo Initiative at Wellington School. The program aims to facilitate reciprocal learning through the cultural integration of newcomer youth to Winnipeg and the exploration of Filipino heritage by our 1.5 and second generation mentors. This learning takes place via mentorship, partnership, literacy/academic projects and activities. Mentors must complete a requisite orientation and have completed high school to volunteer as a mentor.

Aksyon Ng Ating Kabataan (ANAK) Inc. is a an incorporated non-profit organization comprised of concerned young Filipino-Canadian professionals and students. Drawing from a gamut of personal experiences as immigrants, educators, social workers, researchers, and second-generation Canadians, ANAK aims bridge the cultural, generational, and social gaps found both in and outside of the Filipino-Canadian community in Winnipeg.

The word “anak” itself is Tagalog for “my child” or “son / daughter.” ANAK is comprised of the sons and daughters of Winnipeg’s early wave of Filipino-Canadian immigrants. It also represents a growing number of of immigrant children and youth. We envision a future where all Filipino-Canadians have the opportunity to share, learn, and preserve their transnational culture and heritage through education. We strive towards developing Canada’s first extensive Philippine Studies program.
