Aira Villanueva grew up in the farming community of Alcala, Pangasinan, Philippines where her grandfather taught her to graft trees and her grandmother would take her foraging for mushrooms. This close proximity and engagement with nature planted seeds of curiosity and a love of plants. Aira is a student at the University of Winnipeg’s integrated education program majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry, Site Coordinator for UWinnipeg Lets Talk Science, Student Teacher at Maples Met School, Founder of E-Waste Manitoba, and Floral Designer/Owner of Fleur de Fusilero.

This year’s theme - TULAYAN - is a Tagalog word for the pathway/area around a bridge and serves as a metaphor for how we navigate finding ourselves in the space between. Participants will hear from community innovators and explore cultural identity through provocative issues in group discussions and interactive workshops.

ANAK Liwayway Scholarship 2022

ANAK is pleased to present its sixteenth annual “Liwayway Scholarship for Leadership Excellence” to Filipino-Canadian students in Grade 12, who demonstrate a commitment to preserving and promoting Philippine heritage.

Two (2) scholarships of $500 will be awarded in June 2022, and winning essays will be published locally.

To be eligible for this scholarship, the applicant must:

• Provide official school transcripts demonstrating a B (70% or 3.0) grade point average or better in three 40S courses (including English);
• Refer to ANAK’s Oral History Handbook found on the ANAK website;
• Provide a list of up to five interview questions used during the oral history interview; and
• Complete a 500-word (2 pages double-spaced) typed essay in response to the following question:
  “In what ways does our Filipino/a/x community create connection to culture and identity while navigating the space between the homeland and the diaspora?”
  Essays must include direct quotes from one or more interviewees and provide personal reflection on what community history means to the applicant.

Successful applicants are subject to an interview (via Zoom)

Fanny: The Right to Rock

Meet Fanny: June Millington, Jean Millington, Brie Darling, and Alice de Buhr

Fanny was one of the first all women’s rock bands to ever be signed to a multi-album record to a major label. From 1969 – 1975 they rocked out and recorded four albums, produced by Richard Perry and Todd Rundgren that would go on to influence acts like the Runaways, the Go-Go’s, and the Bangles.

This limited screening of their award winning documentary, Fanny: The Right to Rock, by Bobbi Jo Hart is offered across Canada from June 18- 20 to celebrate Philippine Heritage Month and Pride. For Filipinos in the diaspora, in the homeland, for our 2SLGBTQIA+ community and all of our qtBIPOC, for those who love to rock, love music, appreciate the defiant ones, this is a conversation to be heard.

Finding ways to bend so that we don’t break

I’d like to start this article with a message of gratitude to the members of ANAK. Thank you, thank you, thank you. To say that 2020 was a challenging year would be a gross understatement. The entire world and its global economies have been brought to almost a standstill, and all over the world people have dramatically adjusted their lives to flatten the curve and keep the COVID-19 global pandemic at bay.

Here at ANAK Inc., we have had to regroup and try new ways of reaching our youth. Most of our outreach went online. Although we were unsure of how it would be received, being able to reach youth over platforms like Zoom and Google Meet allowed us to reach a wider group of people thus allowing our network of Filipino-Canadian youth, organizations, and allies alike to grow exponentially. We worked with Action Dignity’s Youth Place and Fiesta Filipino’s Youth Empowerment Program in Calgary to check-in on some of the youth and discuss mental wellness. We collaborated with Bahaghari in Calgary, Rise Tribe in Toronto, and UGAT in Edmonton to put together the Anti-Racism Forum for Filipinx Canadians. Our biggest collaboration to date was done in joining the Kapti-Bisig Youth Network, a national network of Filipino youth and student led organizations. Through this network, we combined our efforts to create a national survey that would help identify the needs of Filipino-Canadian youth during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our organization decided that this year’s annual ANAK Liwayway Scholarship for Leadership Excellence would explore topics pertaining to mental health. We asked applicants to examine how open dialogue about mental wellness, in family and in community, impacts the way Filipinos engage globally, especially in light of world events. Kyla Russella M. Soriano (J. H. Bruns Collegiate) and Lyn Roshan Dalit (Sisler High School) each received a $500 scholarship for their post-secondary studies, with honourable mentions also awarded to Lea Darlyn Lopez Martin (Sisler High School) and Yuan Jairus Mistas Garcia (Miles Macdonell Collegiate). Congrats to all of the award recipients and to all of the graduates that we met during this process. You all have a bright future ahead of you.

If there’s anything that 2020 has taught us, it is that building a strong community helps to make us strong as individuals. We are Kapwa. The care that we show to each other during these unprecedented times will be what ensures our survival.

Kapit-Bisig Filipino Youth Network: COVID-19 Survey

Filipino youth groups involved in the Kapit-Bisig Laban COVID Canada’s Youth Network (the KB Youth Network) have come together to learn about the impacts of COVID-19 and issues facing Filipino youth ages 13-29.

Youth Mental Health Matters

Response to COVID-19

As a precaution in response to COVID-19 (coronavirus), ANAK will be postponing our programs to protect the health of participants, volunteers, and loved ones. As youth we may not be the most susceptible to this illness, but we also don’t want to act as carriers to those who may not be as lucky. We are committed to following the advice of public health officials and programming will be rescheduled when we are informed that it is safe to do so.

As much as it is important to minimize the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus), it is also important to remember to remain positive. This pandemic has proven how interconnected we are, both locally and globally. This virus knows no race. We understand that our Filipino-Canadian community has become the target xenophobic ignorance. As an organization that fosters our hyphenated identity, as both Filipino and Canadian, we call on our fellow Winnipeggers to stand united with us to support one another and stem this tide of hatred. Together we can overcome this.

Solidarity Statement

We at Aksyon Ng Ating Kabataan (ANAK) Inc., a community-based organization in support of Filipino-Canadian youth, stand in solidarity with Wet’suwet’en. As immigrants and descendants of immigrants from the Philippines, it is our responsibility to learn and understand the histories of the peoples on whose lands we now live.

Our journey to Winnipeg has come through the exploitation and destruction caused by neoliberalism and capitalism. The effects of large scale multinational mining, deforestation, and militarization has forever altered our homeland. Precarious work and displacement has urged thousands of Filipinos to now find work abroad. The Philippines has been a strong exporter of migrant labour in the world for many decades.

When migrant families are able to reunite, they arrive to build their lives anew in settler colonial spaces like Winnipeg. The north and western areas of this city is home to Canada’s largest urban Indigenous population where we too, as the largest immigrant population in Manitoba, come home to work, organize and together build bridges of knowledges and activism. We find solidarity in these urban neighbourhoods.

We call on immigrant and youth serving organizations to speak to their membership and families on the collective struggle we share against the greed and destruction of neoliberalism and capitalism. We stand alongside the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination statement that Canada immediately suspend work on the Coastal GasLink pipeline, the Trans Mountain pipeline and the Site C dam until free, prior, and informed consent is given from the Indigenous peoples of these areas.

ANAK Inc. stands in solidarity with the Gitdumt’en and Unist’ot’en resistance to the illegal encroachment on Wet’suwet’en territory. We support the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs as they protect their sovereignty and ancestral lands and encourage our networks to sign the Pledge to Stand with Unist’ot’en:
